  1. Day 1

    Arusha to Serengeti

    This planning outline starts in Arusha and continues towards the first park; the meeting point and timing are confirmed in the final proposal. Moving deeper into the Serengeti, the country shifts between short-grass plain, acacia woodland and granite kopjes rising out of the grass like islands. Your guide will use the drive itself as a game drive, and in the central Seronera area — productive year-round for resident wildlife — the sightings usually start coming quickly.     A full day in Serengeti

    Game drives here work several habitats at once. The open plain carries gazelle, topi and hartebeest with cheetah working the edges; the kopjes hold lion, leopard and klipspringer; and the river courses draw elephant, hippo and an extraordinary range of birds. Spotted hyena are everywhere and worth watching properly — they are far more effective hunters than their reputation allows. Between the large predators there is a great deal else. Bat-eared fox and serval hunt the short grass, secretary birds stride through it, and agama lizards blaze orange and blue on the kopjes.   3. Day 3

    Serengeti to Ngorongoro

    The itinerary continues by road, leaving the plains, the road climbs towards the rim of the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world. The ascent is through montane forest, often in mist, and the arrival at the rim viewpoint is the payoff — the whole floor spread out below, with soda lake, forest, swamp and grassland all visible at once. The descent road drops six hundred metres to the floor, and the transition from cold, misty rim to warm open grassland takes about twenty minutes. Down there the crater feels less like a park than an enclosure — walls rising on every side, weather moving across in visible fronts, and animals concentrated at a density that takes some adjusting to.   4. Day 4

    Optional: ngorongoro Crater descent, return to Arusha

    If this optional activity is included in your written quotation, an early descent takes you down the access road to the caldera floor, where the permit allows around six hours of game viewing. The drive works the grassland first, while lion and hyena are still active from the night, then the Lerai forest where some of Tanzania's last big-tusked bulls shelter, and finally the lake shore for flamingo and waterbirds. Climbing back out at the end, the whole floor is laid out below you one last time. Arusha is the working end point, with the final transfer stated in the written proposal.
