Freshwater, hippo pods and the Rift Valley's gentlest day
Lake Naivasha is the highest of the Rift Valley lakes and, unusually for the chain, it is fresh rather than alkaline. That changes everything about it: fever tree forest runs down to the shore, papyrus fringes the bays, and the lake supports large hippo pods and an exceptional bird list rather than the flamingo flocks found on the soda lakes. It functions differently from a game park. Most of the shoreline is private land and lodges, and the main activity is a boat trip rather than a game drive — an hour or two on the water among hippo, fish eagle and cormorant colonies. Crescent Island, a walking sanctuary on a partly submerged crater rim, lets you move on foot among zebra, giraffe, waterbuck and wildebeest because there are no large predators, and nearby Hell's Gate National Park can be explored by bicycle between its red cliffs.
Hippo are the defining species, resting in the shallows by day and grazing the shoreline after dark. The birdlife is outstanding, with African fish eagle, pelican, cormorant, kingfisher, jacana and an enormous range of waders. On land, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck, eland and buffalo use the lakeshore and Crescent Island. This is not a Big Five destination and should not be sold as one.
Enjoyable year-round. Mornings are usually calmest for boat trips, and the afternoon wind can pick up. Birding is strongest from November to April when Palearctic migrants are present.

One night is the norm and fits most Rift Valley itineraries. Two nights makes sense if you want the boat trip, Crescent Island and Hell's Gate without rushing any of them.
Naivasha sits an hour from Lake Nakuru and is almost always combined with it. It also works well as the last stop before returning to Nairobi at the end of a Mara circuit, since the drive back is short.

No, and it should not be presented that way. Naivasha is about hippo, birdlife and walking among plains game. Buffalo are present, but lion, leopard and rhino are not part of the picture here.
On a three- or four-day trip, probably not — time is better spent in the Mara. On a five-day or longer Rift Valley route it earns its place by changing the rhythm and adding water-based wildlife.
