Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi lies in the far south-west of Uganda, held in a deep valley between steeply terraced hills. Islands are scattered across the water, mist often lifts from the surface at dawn, and farmland climbs the surrounding slopes. Many itineraries use it as a quiet recovery stop after gorilla trekking in Bwindi, with canoe trips and walks arranged according to local conditions. The shoreline lodges make it practical to slow the pace between long road journeys, while the terraced highland setting provides a marked change from Uganda’s forests and savannah parks.

Wildlife

This is a scenic and cultural destination rather than a wildlife one. Birdlife is the main draw, with herons, weavers, egrets and kingfishers along the shoreline. Otters are present. There are no large mammals.

Best time to visit

Year-round, following the same pattern as Bwindi. The altitude makes evenings genuinely cold, and mornings on the water are often misty.
